Okay, own place… sort of, TV or Projector?

Hey fellow humans!
Okay, heres the deal, i’m getting thrown out of the house when we move, but at the bottom of the garden is a cabin where i will be presiding. My conundrum is, i have a huge wall and if i use my budget wisely i can afford a good size TV or a good projector, which one is best? The projector will be bigger screen size, but i’ve heard about difficulty with the lamps, and plus in the daytime, wont the picture be affected by natural light, i don’t want to be closing the blinds every time i want to watch TV… also the obvious question is do they work with the box i will be using, a V+ HD Box. So, this is an easy points question if you know your shizz,
Much love.

Given the situation you describe a projector probably isn’t the best choice. Here’s the scoop …

A projector can give you a great 100′+ HD image from V+ HD for less than $1500. Projectors are the best way to get a great, BIG PICTURE relatively cheaply … but they are best in a large room where you want more than 2-3 people to watch and where you can control the light (dark is good, ambient light or daylight from windows washes out the picture … watchable, but inferior). Throw in that lamps last 3000 hrs or so of use (and that’s if you are careful with warm-up and cool-down) and cost $300+ to replace, and they are more expensive to run than a flatscreen TV.

That said, see the calculator at the link and figure out how big a screen you want (BTW, projectors can be used on a painted wall and screens painted or made for <$100) and consider a projector ONLY if you want an image larger than an HDTV costing more than a projector (a 720p model capable of a 120" image can be had these days for about $800, and 1080p for a bit over $1000) can give you (say 50" or more).

There is another option, and that's a projector for the BIG picture stuff and a small HDTV for news and stuff that doesn't warrant the big screen (or closing the drapes). That's what we do ... projector for films and HDTV shows and a TV in the den for other stuff.

Hope that helps.
