Where can I find an application for my phone that sends signals from a distance?

In high school, a classmate had a PDA with a software that would allow him to record the signal from a remote control and send the signal. Copied the "off" signal one our master screen and projector off accidentally during class. While my intentions are not nearly as bad as this, I wish I had a similar program, if anyone knows where I can find something like my HTC Touch or iPod Touch?

The problem you with the PDA that you have installed an infrared port that application uses. Your HTC Touch and iPod Touch is not, the application does not work for you. Most control devices remotely still use infrared technology as are proven and affordable.
