Two Monitors to One Computer: Better than a Big Monitor
By connecting additional monitors to your existing desktop/laptop, you save a considerable amount of money which you could have otherwise spent on a larger screen monitor. You can also use your TV screen as an additional monitor which is even more cost effective as the TV will provide dual benefits this way. To connect more than one monitor, you need two compatible monitor cables. If you want to connect the additional monitor to a laptop, only one cable is enough. Apart from cables, you also require a compatible monitor connector which connects all the monitors with the CPU. It can be a DVI (digital visual interface), Video Graphics Array (VGA), Hi-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) or a S-Video connector in case you use your TV as a second monitor. This connector has multiple ports which are connected to the Video card slot. If you can't find the connector, you can install a video adapter for changing the connector type but this process requires opening of the computer case and to do this, you need to hire a computer service and repair technician.
Once you are ready with all the required components, connect both monitors with the computer and switch them on. The computer will detect the second monitor automatically. Then you need to restart the computer and in case you're using Windows XP, you need to enable Dualview. The computer will detect all the connected monitors and apply the appropriate display settings for all. After this you can make the necessary settings according to your preference. You can drag the multiple monitor icons to arrange them between the monitors. Click on Identify to see which the first monitor is and which the second is. You can also determine what you want to see on the 2nd monitor by selecting the Multiple Displays option. You will get the following choices:

Extend your displays – This option will spread the desktop over both the monitors and you can drag the items and windows between them. If the window does not move while dragging, double click on the title bar of the window and then drag it to the second monitor.

Duplicate your displays – This option will display same content on both the screens and the option is suitable for laptops and laptops have this setting by default as you may want to give a presentation with the laptop connected to a big screen or a projector.

Show the desktop on only one monitor – This option is again used if you're connecting a laptop with a projector or a big screen used for giving presentations. Here, the laptop screen remains blank.
The connection & setup process and the way you use the second monitor is usually seamless and almost automatic, you may still face some minor problems in making adjustments and troubleshooting. To fix these problems you can avail Windows tech support. Once you start using two or more monitor, you will experience how your way of working with computer has changed and your efficiency level has increased. You can perform multitasking at the same time which will save a considerable amount of time.

Half the time my computer will connect to the TV using a VGA Cable and half the time it won't?
What do I do? I'm using a Sony Vaio with all the updated drivers on windows 7 connecting to a 2009 Samsung HDTV. It's not the cable because it works sometimes switch back and forth between Monitor only, Projector only, Duplicate, and Extended Desktop options with Windows+P, but I think I can only trick my TV into accepting this input. Is there a trick to it? Previous to having this problem, I could connect every time I tried, I'm not sure what changed
It could have an auto feature that keeps changing in the tv menu. See if you can set it to pcm or digital
