How to Make Your Projector Bulb Last Longer

Just like any incandescent light, a light bulb in a projector produces a lot of heat, and also can fail unexpectedly and unpredictably. As they are brighter than most of lights, projector bulbs are especially vulnerable when they are operated. The key in making your bulb last longer is to treat it as quietly as possible when it is running. All you need to do is that you should keep it cool and then avoid any unnecessary jolts.

The first step is that you have to run the projector at the lowest setting possible. Most projectors have flexible dimmers. If you turn the dimmer down, the bulb will not get as hot, leading to longer life.

For the second step, you need to clean the filter frequently. You can use a can of compressed air in order to clean the dust and dirt out of the filter about every 4 months. Also, you should blow any accumulated dust off the actual bulb.

After that, you should ensure that the fan is in a good operating condition. If it seems to be blowing less air over the bulb than usual, or is making a lot of noise, have it checked and also repaired. The fan will keep the bulb cool. Any reduction in its efficiency will make a bulb burn out faster.

Remember to not move the projector while it is in use, or while the bulb is still hot. Wait at least 6 minutes after turning off the projector in order to move it.

For the last step, store your projector in a closet with the stable temperature and where nothing is likely to bump into it. Drastic changes in the temperature, as good as bumps and jolts, can damage the light bulb over time.

Can I vacuum the air filter on my projector in order to prolong it's life?

I have a Sony Bravia vpl-aw15 front projector, and a "replace filter" message just came on screen. I removed the filter and it was disgusting.
Unfortunately, I just discovered while looking online that the replacement filters are $65.00us! Way too much money with Christmas in a few days.
So I carefully removed the filter and used my vacuum cleaner to thoroughly suck as much dust as possible from the filter (it was fairly clean at this point) and replaced it. The projector seemed to accept this as a replacement and it's still working.
Has anybody else done this, will my only TV explode or something?
Does anybody know where to get replacment filters for less money? This cost seems incredibly expensive for a bit of cloth in a plastic frame!

Yes, you can vacuum it. I would do it regularly, its very important to keep it clean, it also helps it from overheating.
