projector question Do you know the answer????????????????
I am looking at projectors instead of a flat screen tv. I noticed that lumen means brightness and it is best to have over 2500 lumens but what is a really good amount of contrast??? is 500-1 betther or 2500-1??? and how much do I need to have a good home viewing experience with no regrets? plus how much do you think it will cost me and should I wait??? THANKS
First of all, Contrast does matter when you’re trying to watch a movie, especially if it’s a dark film such as Sleepy Hollow or something. With that being said here’s the deal.
Unless you have a huge room and are throwing your image more than 30′ then any lumen level over 1000 will be fine, even with enough ambient light in the room to read by if you like. With Contrast 1000:1 is good enough and the higher the better,
More importantly than that however is the Native resolution of the projector. A 420p projector would be considered EDTV (Enhanced) so you need at least a 780p to go real HDTV. You can get a really nice one for less than $700 bucks if you shop around and I have attached some links to a few of my favorites below.
Of course the next step up in resolution is 1080p which will cost you a couple of grand. These are really nice projectors, but since there is nothing being broadcast in 1080p any time soon except for Blue Ray and HD DVD it’s not really worth the extra money unless you have or are planning on buying one or the other.
I’d go ahead and pull the trigger now if you can, and one of the other responders was correct regarding the screen. However, you can build your own screen for less than $200 bucks by using some screen fabric from www.dazian.com and some picture framing. Email me if you need help building a screen.
