Why/how does the Sony 120hz HDTV look fake.?

I have 3 hdtvs all 60hz (32"-720p,40"-1080p, 101" dlp projector 1080i). Everyone is amazed with how the 40" and 101" look, and after seeing my friends sony, I think they look like crap...

My friend just bought a $1400 120hz Sony that is 46" (or 52" ?), and his TV looks fake when watching recorded tv on his dtv dvr unit (shows like entourage and the movie step brothers). The people on tv look better than when I seen those same people in real life, and the Florida sky outside doesnt even look as good as the ones on his TV.

Do all 120hz tvs look like that?? Is it only Sony, or sony on a DTV box(I know that sounds stupid). NOOO tv in any of the stores looks that good, not even the sony I was talking about.

I just bought the generic APEX 40" 1080P 60hz HDTV for $449 Target Black Friday sale and might want to pay another $300 for the 120hz if I can get that look, any suggestions on a brand or TV model?

I think you are describing a side effect of 120hz that LCD TVs suffer from. It's most often called the 'soap opera' effect because it has that 'too clean' video look that soap operas have.

I call it the creepy camcorder effect, and I don't like it. It makes major motion pictures shot on film look like it was shot with a cheap flip cam or something.

I've noticed that younger people like it, and actually love it. But I can't blame anyone to be honest because if you aren't used to 24 frame per second film, you don't know any better. I've heard some people call this 120hz thing as giving a 3D effect.

It's a result of creating addition frames or images that never existed and it gives the motion a strange look. Some TVs really show this side effect, others not so much. I see the effect in 240hz LCD, but it seems to be more mild. So bottom line, 120hz is creating something that was never intended and something that doesn't exist in the original material, that's why I'm totally against it.

I own two flat panels, one plasma that doesn't need any fancy 120hz because plasma TV don't have lag time, and I have one LCD in my room that's regular 60hz, I don't like the video look of 120hz.

So if you love it, that's what you want to buy next time, but if you can, see it the store first because every model TV that has 120hz looks a little different.
