Optoma HD72 projector 720p
is a blu ray player compatible with an optoma HD70 projector?
I have an Optoma HD70 Projector which I purchased when it came out in 2006. Apparently it is 1280x720 , 16-9.its HDTV compatibility is 1080p/60. 1080i,720p, 720i, 576p, 576i, 480p. If I buy a Blu Ray player will this projector have the resolution to do the blu ray justice or will I be wasting my money on a BLu Ray seeing that they are quite expensive?
You will get some benefit from Blu-ray on an HD70. The Blu-ray player will output 720p, which the HD70 will accept. The resolution won't be as good as 1080p, but it will be better than DVD (480i), and even better than upscaled DVD. So you will be somewhere between DVD and what Blu-ray is capable of.
However, consider that resolution is only the 4th most important determinant of image quality (after contrast/dynamic range, colour accuracy and colour saturation, which are mainly projector -- not source -- dependent) so with Blu-ray you would be somewhat improving the resolution and getting a bit better colour range (due to the different colour space on Blu-ray vs DVD).
SO ... whether the extra cost of a Blu-ray player and Blu-ray disks is worth it will depend on your taste. Some people -- myself included -- don't find Blu-ray to always be such a huge improvement over good upscaled DVD. Others claim its "night and day". Personally, I still watch lots of DVDs on my 1080p Epson projector and rarely buy (or even rent) Blu-ray disks.
Unfortunately this is one of those subjective areas where you are the only one who can make the call. You really have to try it in your setup. If you are serious, buy a player on condition you can return it if it doesn't give you a worthwhile improvement. Note that it will also make a pretty good DVD upscaler.
