What are some things to consider before purchasing an HDTV?
Later this year, I will be investing in my first HDTV. I want it to be a large one, and the best quality possible. I'll probably spend up to $5k on it, depending on what I find. I have some questions, though..
1. I'll be living in an apartment. Anything to consider there?
2. I know Plasma is better than LCD, but cost more and last less. But there are also projectors. I want awesome quality, gaming capabilities, being able to see it an any time of day in any lighting.
3. If I get Plasma/LCD, should I wall mount it or buy a stand? Again assume I'm renting an apartment.
4. Where's a good place to put it? A friend told me vibrations can damage the television. What should be considered there?

Get a TV that can display movie / film content at its native rate of 24 frames per second. Broadcasts over cable, air, satellite are at 30 frames per second. Hollywood went with 24 for some reason and to get 24 frames up to 30, they make up a fictional 5th frame for every 4 movie frames (because 24*5/4=30).
HD DVDs (like blu-ray) are encoded at 1080p with 24 frames per second. If you step that up to 30, as most players do for most TVs which are designed for 30 or 60 frames per second you introduce artifacts called Judder.
The point of the new 120 Hz TVs is that 120 is divisible by 24, 30, and 60. You can use it to display the native frame rate of any source.
Make sure the TV accepts signals up to 1080p including 1080p at 24 frames per second (it will say this - if it doesn't it probably won't do it). On top of that make sure it can display it at the native rate (or a mulitple of it like 48).
