Historic Magic Lanterns - early projector technology
How much would an HD movie projector cost? and couple other questions?
1. How much would an HD movie projector cost?
2. What are the specs that I have to look for in a projector to pick a good one and one that I need?
3. How long do projectors last? How much can you use them? Can you use them to watch hours of TV? Is the light the only thing that mainly needs to be replaced if so how much is that? Should I then buy used and just replace the light?
4. What is the best type of projector? LCD or other? Is there new technology that has or is coming out?
5. Where is a good place to look at projectors to buy?
I am looking to present films and documentaries that I have made in numerous places mainly indoors in a somewhat theatre size setting.
1. If you want a quality unit that works well and looks good you will spend $800 to $3000 on a HD unit. Most of the time in projectors, spending that extra money on a good name brand is what you want to do.
2. For home use where you can control the lighting in the room you will want a 1500 lumen unit. If you can't control the lighting much you will then want a 2000 to 3000 lumen unit.
Group size is another way to figure up what you might need. If I am going to have a group of up to 50, a 1500 to 2000 lumen projector should work fine. 50 to 150 a 2500 to 3000 lumen projector is what I would use. anything over 150 people you would probably go up to a 5000 lumen unit. Just what we recommend in our rental department.
4.There are two main types at the moment LCD and DLP. I recommend DLP because LCD has a tendency to have their color panel break down faster than DLP. Most LCD's are organic based and the organics will turn yellow over time. DLP will also have color issues but no where as quickly as LCD. The advantage of LCD is their colors are better......but in the long run DLP life span is what you would want.There are a few led units out there, the lifespan on the units are amazing, but they are not very bright as of yet.
5. Go to www.Projectorcentral.com and look at the reviews on projectors. You can look at different units and the price ranges that you would want to say in. I recommend Sanyo, Eiki, Mitsubishi, and Sharp projectors.
