white or grey screen for lcd projector ?

my projector is an epson powerlite 76C,
2000 ansi lumens, XGA resolution.
There is med light to low light (dark at night) where I use it(my livingroom). Would a white or grey screen work best? I am assuming either screen should be high resolution. Are there other good screen manufacturers other than Da-Lite?

The usual answer is that it depends on the contrast ratio of the projector. The Powerlite 76C has a CR of 400:1 … which is pretty low by home theatre standards. A grey screen “should” help optimize contrast a bit and the high lumen output means that somewhat lower brightness won’t be a concern. Since grey is a neutral colour white is not, practically speaking, “better”.

You don’t say where you are but Carada make excellent screens but only ship direct to cutomers (no distributors) so shipping may be expensive if you are in, for example, the UK. A Canadian site with good prices and relatively inexpensive screens is Eastporters. See the links below for both of these.

Given the relatively inexpensive projector you may not want to spend $hundreds on a screen and wish to consider “painting your own” for about $40 in materials. Have a look at the AVS forum’s DIY Screen section (see link). I personally can attest to great results from a light grey screen I made based on the Behr “Silverscreen” thread on this site.
