Powerlite 915W Multimedia Projector Review
How much would it cost to repair 1 dead pixel in a 720p LCD projector?
It's an InFocus IN76 if that matters. After 1180 lamp hours, one dead pixel has shown up. It's well outside the manufacturer's warranty, I bought it in December 2006.
What's a ballpark figure I can expect to pay get that repaired?
I'm calling InFocus monday to check with them, but I'm curious if anyone else knows roughly what I'm getting into.
Thanks!
The InFocus IN76 is a DLP projector not an LCD projector. If a pixel is dead then the only way to repair it is to replace the DLP chip itself and that would be very expensive. I don't think they can be easily replaced, if at all. Most likely it would cost well over $500 to replace it (cost of the light engine (chip) plus labor). It might have undesirable results too after someone monkeys with it (misalignment, more dead pixels than you started with).
1 pixel out is not a huge deal, but can be annoying. You might be better off buying another used IN76 that doesn't have a bulb or has high bulb use. It would be cheaper and you could use the bulb you have. The other option would be to buy a new one...1080p is looking nice these days.
Are you sure it's a dead pixel (stuck mirror), or is it a dust blob? Dust blobs can be tricky to get rid of. You need to take it apart and clean it with compressed air if it is the case. The link below shows a good example of a dust blob. You could have it professionally cleaned, might cost $100 or so. It could be a dust particle on the chip, mirror, optics or color wheel.

US $29.95
