How do I connect an InFocus 2104EP to a Dell Studio 1440?
My wife has a new Dell laptop - Studio 1440. It has USB ports, an HDMI port but no traditional "blue" 15 pin VGA (?) port.
Our Cub Scout pack has an InFocus 2104EP projector. It came with a "blue" VGA cable and a USB cable. Since I can't use the VGA cable, I'm using the USB cable (that the quick start guide says can be used).
Well, when I fire up the machines, the InFocus goes through its source check and doesn't "find" that it's connected to the laptop.
What can I do to fix this? The InFocus website wasn't terribly helpful. I need this setup to be in a working state by this Friday night (our pinewood derby).
That USB port on your inFocus projector is NOT for transmitting video.
It is to allow remote control of the projector's features (such as focus, color, brightness and contrast) from a laptop.
And unfortunately, your Dell laptop's HDMI port is NOT compatible with VGA. There are NO adapter cables that will make it work, because HDMI transmits a DIGITAL video signal while VGA requires an ANALOG video signal. And Digital is NOT compatible with Analog.
Sorry to tell you this, but there is absolutely NOTHING you can do to make that projector work with your laptop, outside of buying a signal converter box that can translate the digital HDMI video signal to analog VGA, or one of those piece-of-crap external USB video cards with a VGA output (which are unstable, slow as molasses, and very limited in resolution).
