Taking a Look at the Home Theater System Components

Once you've seen your favorite movies in a large place of art, it's just not the same if you get the videos and watch them again on a smaller screen. And the quality of music is much richer if you have a sound system that can really bring out all the nuances. This is the reason why custom home theaters are coming more and more into style for homeowners.

Your home audio speakers are equally as important as your visual equipment, and in fact will help bring the visuals to life. So do a lot of research on these. If you're going for surround sound, you'll want from five to eight speakers. You'll need a subwoofer to handle the crucial low frequencies, and a tweeter for the high frequencies. And of course you'll put a flat screen television into your house theater system, to do the movies and other programs justice.

You'll undoubtedly want to have a music player connected to your home theater system as well, to make the entertainment complete. But if you're in a dedicated room, then why not go whole hog and make this a real place of art and add a projector and screen? Many systems have projectors you can mount on the ceiling, which play movies on a large, full-fledged screen on the wall. Add to this some comfortable home theater seating, and you've come as close to a real place of art or concert hall as you can possibly get.

The final decisions about your home theater system will probably revolve around whether you should buy a system that comes almost complete, in a single package, or buy the components one by one. It's harder to choose and properly wire home receivers to handle components bought separately, yet the end result is usually better when the system is put together this way. You'll need to judge your own level of expertise, and decide which type of system will work for you, and will produce the kinds of results you want in your place of art.

what are your thoughts on a large flat-panal TV vs. a high def projector?

im planning on turning my basement into a home theater, and i just cant decide between the two. money will be a factor, but may not necessarily be more important than quality.

i will be using a 7.1 surround system paired with some higher end tower speakers and tonally matched surrounds. if i choose the projector, ill be using a tower for my center channal, behind the screen. if i choose the flat panal, ill be using a regular center channal speaker both above and below the screen.

people will be sitting about 8-14ft from the screen and no more than 30 degrees off center.

Choice -- in my view is a no brainer -- but then I'd take the immersive experience of a large screen (8"-10') projector setup any day over any financially feasible flat screen.

From the sound of it you have the room for a projector, light control is not likely a problem (projectors are best used in a dim / dark room), and the cost of a projector is less than a comparable quality flat screen.

The questions you need to ask and answer for yourself are whether paying $300-$400 for a bulb every 2-3 years is a concern (Lifetime is typically ~3000 hrs, and they usually just slowly dim rather than burning out); whether you have room and suitable sight lines for the screen; how/where you will mount the projector and wire it to the A/V equipment; and do you have room for the number of people who will want to come and watch!

I don't know why flat screens are so popular and anyone who says a projector gives a low quality picture has obviously never seen a prpoerly set up projector. But then, they have probably not realized they are probably watching a projector when they go to the cinema!

So ... do your reasearch at projectorcentral.com and projectorreviews.com, and go for it ... you won't regret the decision.
