Choosing Projector for Golf Simulator
Projector is one of the most important parts of the golf simulator. Most of the golf simulators come with good projectors, however if you are not satisfied with the performance or your golf simulator projector has started acting up and you are planning to get a new one the below points would help you choosing the right one as per your requirements.
You should check the Lumens of the projector. Lumens basically are the power of light perceived by the human eye. If you are playing on your golf simulator in a dark room, it is not going to make much difference but if your room is not dark you should get a projector with high lumens. You will see the images clearly in the light by using a projector with high lumens. A projector with 1500-2500 Lumens is good enough for your golf simulator.
Check for the contrast ratio of the projector. Anything above 800:1 is good enough for playing golf on your simulator. However if you are planning to use your projector other than just gaming, you should get a projector with high contrast ratio.
Some golf simulator software is made for 4:3 screens, so do check the aspect ratio of your projector before buying it. If your simulator supports 16:9 ratio, it is always better to go for it as you will have a look of wider area. Also it can be used for other multimedia purposes.
Throw angle plays an important role in projectors. Consider you have a small room for your golf simulator then you need to opt for a projector with wider throw angle. Most of the projectors are capable of projecting a 120 inches diagonal image from a distance of 12 to 18 feet.
The lamps used in these projectors are very costly, so always choose a lamp with higher lamp life. Usually this specification is mentioned as "lamp life" and averages around 2500 hours. Try to get the best bargain that is price to life ratio.

If you want to play high end games through your PC or watch a movie, make sure that the projector supports Full HD resolution. The full HD resolution is basically 1920x1080 pixels which is a standard for watching high definition movies. If you are not aware about pixels, these are small dots which make an image. An image with 2073600 pixels is definitely going to be more clear and detailed as compared to 921600 (1280×720) half HD or also referred as just HD. Video format supported by such projectors are 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p/60, 576i, 576p. A 1080p projector would not make any difference when used for golf simulation as most of these simulators software can't do 1080p and are limited to 720p, so better stay away from these projectors if you are planning to use it just for golf simulator as it would cost you much more amount than normal projectors.
Last but not the least, do check the connection options. The various connecting options available are S-Video, Composite, Component, RGB, HDMI, USB and many more. Do check what your requirements are and go for the best deal.

Question about interpreting resolution specs on a projector (front)?
Do the resolutions, when stated as:
"True 1,024 x 768 XGA, with intelligent compression for 1,280 x 1,024 SXGA."
Have anything to do with any type of hook up other than a p.c.? For instance, does that have any bearing on the quality of the picture you will receive with a dvd, or a video game console?

Yes, this spec is for a PC. But you should get a decent picture using the s-video input. Any of the outputs from your game console will still be 525 lines of interlaced video. That is a standard NTSC signal. Unfortunately since the projector is older, no HD input. But I think you will be surprised how good s-video looks. It's much sharper than the composite in. Text and edges are sharper.
