Will Upconversion or Blu Ray provide any image improvement on a non-HDMI projector?
I watch movies on a digital projector that's admittedly not designed for top of the line home theaters. (It's an Epson EX-30). I can't afford to upgrade to a new projector with an HDMI port, and I'm trying to improve the image on my current one.
I'm not quite as concerned with a perfect HD image as I am with an image with better contrasts and better accuracy in shades of black and white. The projector uses component video cables, but with my old 480p DVD player, that doesn't count for much and the image still looks a bit muddy.
The Epson EX-30 is compatible with most HD devices, but it doesn't have an HDMI port, so I know that if I switched my player to an upconverter or Blu Ray, I wouldn't get the full benefits of HD. My question is, will the players improve the contrast or clarity of the picture even a little bit, or is it entirely the fault of the projector that the image looks the way it does?
If you use the Component cables, then the picture from a Blu Ray player would be better, especially if the projector is able to accept HD images. Older HD compatible projectors used DVI inputs for the HD picture. The Component inputs will present the resolution as 720p, the minimum required to be considered Hi Def.
Your old DVD player, even if it has Component outputs can upconvert to a 720i image, if its designed to be an upconverter. No Standard DVD player, no matter what it says, can upconvert to HD ( or 720p)
