Vivitek D511 2600 Lumen XGA HDMI 120Hz 3D-Ready Portable DLP Projector (White)
Is the picture quality on a DLP projector much better w/ HDMI to DVI than it is w/ component cables to DVI?
I have an In Focus 4805 projector and a HD/ digital cable box. It's connected with component cables through an adapter to the DVI/M1 port. It's a pretty good picture @ 120 in. (especially the HD channels) but I'm wondering if the quality would be significantly better using HDMI to DVI? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Theoretically the direct HDMI/DVI connection should be better, since there is less manipulation of the signal (A-D,D-A conversion specifically). The actual differences may be hard to see. Some people report noticeable improvement, others see little. You can spend hours slogging through the discussions on the AVS forum, http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/; search on "HDMI" or "DVI". However, there is no reason to avoid the HDMI-DVI interface if you have it even if the difference is minor. A good reason to use HDMI is the potential threat of "down-rez" of analog outputs from the high definition DVD players. This is because only HDMI/DVI can incorporate copy protection, and the DVD specs of both HD formats allow for a "down-rez" flag to limit analog output to 480p. So far no studio is using that, and they say they have no plans to; but that could change. Why take a chance? Broadcasters (at present) are prohibited from down-rezzing, but the "broadcast flag" which allows that is being transmitted. Again, the FCC could change its mind. With HDMI you have no worries.
