BenQ V2400 Eco BL Flickering Effect on Video
Which resolution should I be setting my blu-ray player at?
I am playing blu-ray's through my Sony BDP-S350 into my Benq W500 projector which has a max resolution of 720p so I was wondering what the output video resolution should be set at on my blu-ray player..720p or 1080p. Just wanted to know if there would be any difference. Oh by the way I have tried both using both settings and haven't noticed any difference except for the fact that when my blu-ray player is set at 1080p there is the occasional flicker...usually only on the menu's but I haven't noticed any flicker when it is set at 720p
The answer is, simplistically, whichever approach gives you the best result. You have to test empirically and decide.
Before you dismiss this as unhelpful, consider:
- First, that the display (projector) can't be greater than 720p resolution even if the input is higher.
- Second, if you set the Sony to output 720p, you are using the video processor (scaler) in the Blu-ray player to down-sample the 1080p info on the disc to 720p.
- Third, on the other hand, if you feed 1080p direct to the Benq it's video processor will convert the signal to 720p.
So ... which gives better results depends on the relative qualities of the processors. I suspect any difference is marginal ... but you must judge that since there is no clear answer based on specs.
Note that the Benq will accept 1080p at 24, 50 or 60 fps (See link)... so you can also experiment with the Sony's output settings re frame rate (e.g. 60 or 24 fps) too. In theory 24 fps (native for movies on Blu-ray) should give less jitter ... but not everyone likes the result (and it's also dependent on the way the display's processor handles the input, so some displays give better results than others.
Hope this helps, not confuses.
