OPTOMA GT-720 PROJECTOR REVIEW
Display Resolutions Overview
Here are the most commonly used display resolutions and aspect ratios, plus how they're typically used. To view a full line-up of commercial and home theater projectors in these resolutions, visit www.digitalprojection.com.
1280 x 720 (720p - 16 x 9 or 1.78:1): Great for High Definition Video applications. Digital Projection projectors in HD include the iVision 20 HD.
1400 x 1050 (SX+ - 4 x 3 or 1.33:1): Predominantly a computer resolution. Also excellent for edge blending as the 4 x 3 aspect ratio maximizes screen height. Digital Projection projectors in sx+ resolution include the single-chip dVision sx+ and three-chip TITAN sx+ and LIGHTNING sx+.
1920 X 1080 (1080p - 16 x 9 or 1.78:1): The benchmark for full 1080 high definition displays. Digital Projection's 1080p projectors include the single-chip iVision, M-Vision and dVision projectors, plus three-chip TITAN and LIGHTNING 1080p projectors.
1920 x 1200 (WUXGA - 16 x 10 or 1.6:1): Outstanding for applications where both computer and 1080p sources will be displayed, as well as Video Editing where extra pixels allow for viewing the Operating System’s taskbar without blocking Video. Digital Projection's WUXGA projectors include the three-chip TITAN and LIGHTNING WUXGA projectors.
2048 x 1080 (2K resolution - 1.89:1): Although this aspect ratio doesn't match the native aspect ratio of films which are typically 1.85 or 2.35:1, this format is predominantly used for digital cinema.

Complex question about SDTV and HDTV?
I want to know if someone can help me understand the Whole SDTV thing
First of all I understand what teh S H and E are for. I also understand that a TV in its basic parts is like the relation of a monitor and a computer . No computer and the monitor is useless.
So the question is can a SDTV tuner pick up and display a HDTV signal.
This question comes from this:
The signal comes to the tuner in what ever format it will come through ( 480 i, p 720, or 1080i or p).
Is the S saying that no matter what you do you won't get anything beyound a 480 image native and all the other broadcasts are going to be in scaled down to fit.
Or is the S related to only the monitor.
I need to know this because I use DLP projectors as my monitors. They have no built in source. I need to get something that can deliver the source like a DVD recorder with a SDTV tuner.
I will help you to understand but first forget all what you know about SDTV, EDTV and HDTV because you are too much confused. Let's begin:
There are two technologies for TV broadcast in USA. Those are the kind of signals that TVs can understand using built-in turners and antennas (so forget about Cable or Satellite here):
These technologies are NTSC and ATSC.
NTSC is the one used all this years to obtain TV signals. This is the known "analog TV broadcast" system. This technology uses 525 scan lines but only about 480 scan lines to display the image (the rest was to carry other data).
As the signal is analog then image can be affected by noise.
All TVs right now have bulit-in NTSC turner to understand this signal. But NTSC will be off the air someday forever and then there will be no need for TVs to incorporate this technology anymore.
ATSC is the new "digital TV broadcast" system and is the technology supporting "HDTV broadcast". TVs will require a built-in ATSC turner to receive and understand this signal. As this is a digital signal then the picture will be clear and noise free. It also supports digital audio including 5.1 surround sound. Here is where SDTV, EDTV and HDTV come in:
SDTV (Standard definition TV)
Is the 480i/480p resolution (640x480) that allow easy transfers from the old analog NTSC resolution to the digital domain. It's like the "digital version of NTSC". This could disappear in the future too because all TVs will be HDTV.
EDTV (Enhanced definition TV)
Is the 480p "widescreen" version (704x480) that allow TV content broadcast taking advantage of widescreen TV sets without HDTV support. This is to support the transition from old 4:3 TVs to newer 16:9 TVs. Given that in the future again all TV sets will be Widescreen and HDTV then this could disappear too.
HDTV (High definition TV)
Are the 720p (1280x720) /1080i (1920 x 1080) high resolutions that allow new level of detail on image. As all TV manufacturers are focusing on HDTV then this will be the definitive format (until something better gets developed again).
Note: EDTV term is used also to call some TV's with better than standard definition resolution (usually 854x480). But this is different to the EDTV ATSC standard. They are usually meant to take full advantage of DVDs together with digital TV resolution support (but usually without built-in ATSC turner).
So undestood that:
Regular turners can only receive the NTSC signal.
Only ATSC turners (also called HDTV turners) can receive the ATSC signal.
Now le't move to your DLP projector:
Projectors and other displays without a built-in turner doesn't need to understand NTSC or ATSC. They just need some external equipment (source) to feed the picture to them in a way they can understand. And this depends on the connection method, so your DLP projector can come with multiple input connector types:
Composite inputs will support up to 480i.
S-Video inputs will support up to 480i with better image.
Component will support from 480i to 1080p (as specified in the projector manual).
HDMI will support from 480i to 1080p (as specified in the projector manual).
So you just need some source equipment that really understand ATSC signals and have matching outputs (composite, S-video, Component or HDMI) that your projector will understand. This is called:
ATSC / HDTV turner set top box.
See one here:
(This only have composite and component outputs and lets you select the output signal 480i, 480p, 720p or 1080i)
http://www.shop.com/op/~GRANDTEC_TUN_5000_Airvision_ATSC_DTV_HDTV_Receiver_Tuner-prod-39458716
The resolution you will see at the end will be the native resolution of your DLP projector but the quality of image will depend on the connection used:
Example:
You know that
480i SDTV is 640x480
480p EDTV is 704x480
720p HDTV is 1280x720
1080i HDTV is 1920x1080
Then if your projector is SVGA (800x600) you will see the picture always scaled to 800x600 no matter the input signal but:
If you use composite or S-video all ATSC resolutions (480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i) will be scaled down to 480i before getting into the projector, then your projector will scale up to 800x600.
If you use component or HDMI then all ATSC resolutions supported by the projector will enter as they are (480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i) and then the projector will scale up or down the signal to 800x600 again (but with better quality on 720p or 1080i signals than when using composite or s-video).
The same will happen to DVD, Bluray or HD-DVD players, Cable or Satellite Box connected to the projector.
