Different types of HDMI cables

If you have just had your friend emailing you a funny video and you want to watch this video in its full glory rather than on a small computer or laptop screen, then you would want to "hook" your computer to your LCD or plasma TV and view it on the big screen. There are various types of cables and connections, which you can use to do that, depending on your computer hardware and your TV model, and the HDMI cable is one of them. You can use HDMI cables to connect your computer, gaming console, PlayStation, Xbox, or camcorder to a digital TV, monitor, or video projector. What the cable does is, it transmits uncompressed digital data, using slightly different standards – while the HDMI 1.0 to HDMI 1.2a cables use the EIA/CEA-861-B video standard, the HDMI 1.3+ cables use the CEA-861-D one.

At the time of this writing, there are various HDMI cable types and choosing the correct one for your application could get a bit complicated and confusing. Unless you want to get down and dig deeper into the nitty-gritty details, you are probably better off going to the nearest electronics store and explaining your situation, or getting online and ordering the cables after you know which one you need. The most commonly used HDMI cable types are:

  • Standard HDMI with up to 1080i and 720p
  • Standard HDMI with Ethernet
  • High speed HDMI
  • High speed HDMI with Ethernet
  • Automotive HDMI

The 1080i refers to a high definition video format, which differs from the 1080p progressive scan mode, and it typically uses 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution, and 16:9 aspect ratio. On the other hand, 720p is a 1280 × 720 resolution video format with progressive scan.

There are a number of other HDMI cable types, namely platinum or gold plated, where the connectors of the HDMI cables are plated differently. However, you can use each one of these interchangeably as there is virtually no difference between the two. The plating of the connectors could make a difference as to how prone they are to oxidizing, but since you are unlikely to use these cables outdoors and also you are likely not to be using them for years to come, you can purchase either of the two and get the same results. The HDMI cables are relatively inexpensive and as long you select the right type, they will give you excellent video and audio quality, which you can enjoy on a big TV or video projector screen.

hdmi and component output . My projector has an rga pin setup, is component 1080i ?

I have a component to RGA cable. It works with my projector, from my ATt u-verse box, but is it 1080i ? My projector is capable of 1080i.

Component can support all the way to 1080p, but in most TVs/projectors it only supports up to 1080i/720p.
